DESERT DEGENS WEEKLY BRIEF • MAY 6, 2026
This Week in Vegas: Is the Recovery Real?
Vegas had a week full of mixed signals. Gaming revenue was up big statewide, MGM and Caesars sounded more optimistic about the Strip, but not everyone is seeing the same bounce. Meanwhile, Wynn is being investigated over two travel-associated Legionnaires’ disease cases, MGM had to respond to WrestleMania-related security concerns, and two new food spots opened that Vegas visitors may actually want to check out.
TL;DR (60-Second Version)
Vegas gaming revenue jumped — new Gaming Control Board data showed statewide gaming revenue was up more than 11% last month.
The recovery may be uneven — MGM and Caesars sounded more positive on Vegas, while Boyd said Las Vegas was down.
Wynn is being investigated — two travel-associated Legionnaires’ disease cases were tied to Wynn stays, but this is an investigation, not a confirmed broader outbreak.
MGM responded to security concerns — fan incidents around WrestleMania week put hotel crowd control back in the spotlight.
New food options landed — SoulBelly BBQ opened at Miracle Mile Shops, and Rio opened Tacos Del Rio Cocina & Bar.
Sports tourism keeps driving Vegas — major events are becoming one of the city’s biggest business engines.

Vegas Gaming Revenue Is Up — But the Recovery Looks Uneven
Nevada posted a strong March, with new Gaming Control Board data showing statewide gaming revenue up more than 11%.
But the recovery may not be even. MGM said Las Vegas revenue grew for the first time in more than a year, and Caesars said the market is getting healthier thanks to stronger group/convention demand and steadier leisure travel.
Boyd, meanwhile, said Las Vegas was down even though its overall earnings were up. That points to a split market: the Strip may be improving, while locals and off-Strip properties could still be softer.
The big question: is Vegas recovering across the board, or are the biggest properties just pulling ahead?
Wynn Las Vegas Investigated Over Legionnaires’ Disease Cases
Southern Nevada health officials are investigating two travel-associated Legionnaires’ disease cases tied to Wynn Las Vegas stays — one from September 2025 and one from February 2026.
Legionnaires’ is a serious pneumonia linked to bacteria in building water systems. Right now, this is an investigation, not a confirmed broader outbreak.
MGM Responds to WrestleMania Security Concerns
MGM responded to security concerns after fan incidents tied to WrestleMania week.
Big event weekends bring huge crowds, spending, and attention — but also more pressure on hotel security and crowd control. As Vegas leans harder into event-driven tourism, this is something worth watching.
