This Week in Vegas: Who Controls the Casino Floor?
Vegas had a week that says a lot about where the casino business is headed. Caesars has agreed to sell to Tilman Fertitta, MGM has a bid on the table from Barry Diller’s People Inc., Resorts World is backing away from cashless gaming, and neighborhood poker rooms keep disappearing.
The big theme this week: the Strip is getting more concentrated, the casino floor is getting more optimized, and some old-school parts of Vegas are getting squeezed out.

Billionaires Are Buying the Strip
Caesars has agreed to be acquired by Tilman Fertitta’s Fertitta Entertainment for about $5.7 billion in equity, or roughly $17.6 billion including assumed debt.
That would take Caesars private, putting Caesars Palace, Paris, Harrah’s, Horseshoe, and Flamingo under one billionaire owner who already owns Golden Nugget.
Days later, Barry Diller’s People Inc. made an unsolicited bid for MGM Resorts, valuing it around $18 billion. MGM confirmed it received the offer but has not committed.
The big question: are deep-pocketed private owners good for Vegas, or does it mean even more pressure to squeeze every dollar from the player?
Resorts World Is Killing Cashless Gaming
Resorts World opened in 2021 as the cashless casino. Its digital wagering system was supposed to be one of the property’s signature features.
Now the casino is phasing that out and moving back toward cash and ticket-in, ticket-out.
That matters because cashless gaming was sold as convenient, but many players never fully embraced it. It also means every bet is easier to track and tie to an identity.
The takeaway: cash still has a place on the casino floor, especially for players who do not want every spin logged in a digital wallet.
The Neighborhood Poker Room Is Going Extinct
Poker rooms keep disappearing from Las Vegas.
More than 54% of Las Vegas poker rooms have closed since 2000. Only about 8 are left on the Strip, and roughly 17 remain across the whole valley.
The reason is simple math: poker takes up space, needs dealers, and only earns a small rake. Slots can generate far more money on the same square footage.
For players, this one hurts. Poker is one of the few casino games where a regular player can feel like they are playing against other people, not just the house.
