DESERT DEGENS WEEKLY BRIEF • MAY 20, 2026

This Week in Vegas: Is the City Getting Bigger or Better?

Vegas had one of those weeks that shows how fast the city keeps changing. A women’s pro hockey team is coming to T-Mobile Arena, U.S. commercial gaming revenue hit another record, and Vegas already hit 100 degrees.

Add in new attractions, returning restaurants, more residencies, and a few weird visitor updates, and the big question is simple: is Vegas getting better for visitors — or just bigger, hotter, and busier?

TL;DR (60-Second Version)

  • Vegas is getting women’s pro hockey — the Professional Women’s Hockey League announced a Las Vegas expansion team for the 2026–27 season.

  • T-Mobile Arena gets another tenant — the new team is expected to play there, adding more event weekends to the Vegas calendar.

  • Commercial gaming hit a record — U.S. commercial gaming revenue reached $78.6B in 2025, up 9.1% from 2024.

  • Gaming taxes were massive — the industry generated $17.9B in state and local gaming tax revenue.

  • Vegas hit 100 early — Las Vegas reached 100 degrees on May 8, more than two weeks before the normal first triple-digit day.

  • More Vegas changes — Golden Nugget’s shark slide is closed for the season, Lotus of Siam reopened on East Sahara, and new attractions keep landing around town.

Vegas Gets a Women’s Pro Hockey Team

The Professional Women’s Hockey League announced a Las Vegas expansion franchise for the 2026–27 season, and the team is expected to play at T-Mobile Arena. That gives one of the city’s biggest sports venues another major tenant.

The bigger story is what this says about Vegas. The city is no longer just hosting big sports events — it is becoming a full sports destination. Another pro team means more event weekends, more room demand, more restaurant traffic, and more crossover casino action.

U.S. Commercial Gaming Hit Another Record

The American Gaming Association’s State of the States 2026 report said U.S. commercial gaming revenue hit $78.6 billion in 2025, up 9.1% from 2024.

The industry also generated $17.9 billion in gaming tax revenue for state and local governments.

That sounds great for operators, but it raises the player-side question: are guests actually getting a better experience, or does record revenue just mean gambling is more accessible than ever?

Vegas Hit 100 Degrees Early

Las Vegas officially hit 100 degrees on May 8, more than two weeks ahead of the city’s usual first triple-digit day around May 24.

Reports also said Vegas reached 104 and broke a daily record during the same heat stretch.

For visitors, this matters. Extreme heat changes how people move around town. When it gets that hot, more people shift indoors — casinos, bars, restaurants, malls, and paid attractions — instead of walking the Strip for long stretches.

More Vegas Notes This Week

Golden Nugget’s famous shark-tank slide is closed for the season because of maintenance, which is a real letdown for guests who booked around that signature pool attraction.

Lotus of Siam also reopened at its original Commercial Center location on East Sahara, bringing back one of Vegas’ most famous off-Strip food spots.

And Vegas keeps adding more non-gambling attractions, including Netflix House, Museum of Ice Cream at AREA15, Universal Horror Unleashed, and the Evel Knievel Experience opening in the Arts District.
