DESERT DEGENS WEEKLY BRIEF • JUNE 17, 2026

This Week in Vegas: Is Value Still Part of the Trip?

Vegas had a week that hit both sides of the visitor experience. Primm got a last-minute rescue after looking like it was headed for shutdown, NBA Summer League is staying in Las Vegas through 2028, and the “Vegas is too expensive” conversation is getting harder to ignore.

The big question this week: can Vegas keep growing while still feeling like a trip regular visitors can justify?

TL;DR (60-Second Version)

  • Primm may be saved — Terrible’s signed an agreement to operate the Primm hotel-casinos and related properties.

  • 344 jobs were on the line — the original shutdown would have affected hundreds of workers and several state-line properties.

  • The deal still needs approval — Nevada regulators have a special hearing set for June 25.

  • NBA Summer League stays in Vegas — the LVCVA approved about $4.25M to keep it in town through July 2028.

  • Vegas costs are under pressure — reports say summer vacation costs are causing some travelers to cancel or switch away from Vegas.

  • More Vegas notes — a massive In-N-Out opened on the Strip, Penn & Teller extended at Rio, and Sigma Derby is moving to Golden Gate.

Primm Gets a Last-Minute Rescue

Primm may not be disappearing after all.

After Primm Valley Resorts announced plans to close its remaining properties, the Primm family signed an agreement with Las Vegas-based Terrible’s to operate the hotel-casinos and related properties.

The original closures were set for July 4 and would have affected 344 workers. Under the new deal, Primm Valley Casino Resort and the Oasis Apartments are expected to be first in line for renovations.

It still needs regulatory approval, with a special hearing set for June 25. But for anyone who has ever driven in from Southern California, this is a major reversal.

NBA Summer League Stays in Las Vegas

NBA Summer League is staying in Las Vegas through 2028.

The LVCVA approved about $4.25 million to keep the event in town, locking in one of the biggest basketball events of the offseason at UNLV’s Thomas & Mack Center.

Summer League brings every NBA team, top draft picks, national media, and plenty of basketball fans during a slower July travel stretch.

It is also another sign that the NBA-to-Vegas momentum is real.

The “Vegas Is Too Expensive” Conversation Gets Louder

The value debate around Vegas is not going away.

New reporting says Las Vegas is one of the most-canceled trips of 2026, with about 65% of travelers saying summer vacation costs affected their plans and roughly 24% switching away from Vegas.

Paid parking, resort fees, check-in fees, and $26 minibar water keep feeding the frustration.

At the same time, UNLV and the LVCVA are projecting a 2026 rebound. That is the tension: Vegas is betting big events and premium experiences can offset budget travelers feeling priced out.

More Vegas News This Week

A massive new In-N-Out opened at BLVD Las Vegas on the Strip, giving visitors a rare value story in the middle of rising prices.

Downtown also gets a nostalgia win: Sigma Derby is moving from The D to Golden Gate, keeping one of the last mechanical horse-racing slot machines alive.
