DESERT DEGENS WEEKLY BRIEF • May 13, 2026

This Week in Vegas: Is the Old Road Trip Era Ending?

Vegas had a week that says a lot about where the city is headed. Primm is fading as a classic California-to-Vegas gateway stop, Canadian visitation is down, and downtown casinos are using targeted offers to bring those visitors back.

Meanwhile, Sphere is looking less like a flashy experiment and more like a real Vegas money machine.

TL;DR (60-Second Version)

  • Primm is fading fast — remaining resort operations, the Lotto Store, and major gas stops are reportedly shutting down.

  • 344 workers are affected — closures reportedly include Primm Valley Resort, Buffalo Bill’s, Whiskey Pete’s, Primm Center, and Flying J.

  • Canadian visitation dropped — Canadian visits fell 17.4% in 2025, while overall international visitation was down 4.8%.

  • Downtown is fighting back — Circa, The D, and Golden Gate said their Canadian promo brought in 50,000 visitors and over $10M in slot play.

  • Sphere is now profitable — No Doubt started its run, and The Eagles added six more dates.

  • More Vegas shifts — weekly Strip fireworks are coming in June, food keeps moving upscale, and regulators are discussing tougher AML tools.

Primm Is Fading as a Vegas Gateway Stop

Primm’s role as a classic California-to-Vegas stop looks like it is disappearing.

Remaining resort operations, the Lotto Store, and major gas stops are reportedly shutting down, including Primm Valley Resort, Buffalo Bill’s, Whiskey Pete’s, Primm Center, and Flying J. The closures are expected to affect 344 workers.

For Southern California drivers, this is bigger than one casino closing — it feels like the end of a historic state-line stop.

Vegas Lost Canadian Visitors — Downtown Wants Them Back

Canadian visitation to Las Vegas reportedly fell 17.4% in 2025, while international visitation was down 4.8% overall.

Downtown is pushing back. Circa, The D, and Golden Gate said their Canadian promo brought in 50,000 visitors, thousands of room nights, and more than $10 million in slot play.

The takeaway: Vegas is using targeted offers to win specific travelers back.

Sphere Is Becoming a Real Vegas Money Machine

Sphere is starting to look like a real Vegas business engine.

The company is now reporting profitability, while No Doubt has started its run and The Eagles added six more dates: Sept. 18–19, Nov. 13–14, and Nov. 27–28.

That brings The Eagles residency to 64 shows since opening in September, with tickets for the new dates set to go on sale May 15 at 10 a.m. Pacific.

The takeaway: Sphere is now both a money-maker and a major Vegas trip-planning draw.
