DESERT DEGENS WEEKLY BRIEF • JULY 22, 2026

This Week in Vegas: Big Bets Are Back

Vegas had a week full of big gambling headlines. The Cosmopolitan debuted two $5 million linked slot progressives, a Bitcoin-ATM mogul wants to build a $550 million horse racetrack on the Strip, and Boomer’s Sportsbook is taking over the books at Binion’s and Four Queens.

The big theme this week: Vegas is still finding new ways to make gambling feel loud, interesting, and worth talking about.

TL;DR (60-Second Version)

  • $5M jackpots hit the Strip — The Cosmopolitan debuted two separate $5 million linked progressive jackpots.

  • Cosmo remodeled high limit — the new room has 110+ slot and video poker machines, upgraded service, and a more enclosed layout.

  • Horse track on the Strip? — Chip Meyers is proposing a $550 million thoroughbred racetrack called Las Vegas Downs.

  • Boomer’s keeps expanding — the independent sportsbook operator is taking over the books at Binion’s and Four Queens.

  • Downtown poker gets a win — Golden Nugget opened a newly relocated poker room, now the only one operating downtown.

  • More Vegas notes — Luxor is testing colored Sky Beam options, Fertitta cleared another Caesars hurdle.

The Cosmo Debuts Two $5M Slot Progressives

The Cosmopolitan opened a remodeled high-limit slot room with two separate $5 million linked progressive jackpots.

One links two Dragon Link machines. The other connects Phoenix Link with Lightning 10 Year Storm. Aristocrat says these are the largest linked jackpots it has ever placed on a casino floor.

The room also has more than 110 slot and video poker machines, an expanded cashier cage, upgraded beverage service, and a more enclosed layout.

The takeaway: the Strip is still chasing the high-limit slot player, and a $5 million jackpot is a serious headline.

A $550M Horse Track on the Strip?

Tech entrepreneur Chip Meyers wants to build a high-end thoroughbred racetrack called Las Vegas Downs.

The proposal calls for a 55-acre site on Las Vegas Boulevard between Mandalay Bay and M Resort, with a 20,000-seat grandstand that could expand to 40,000.

The wild part: no casino. Meyers says the goal is to boost Strip hotel occupancy, not compete with gaming operators.

There is still a big catch — Nevada lawmakers would need to loosen pari-mutuel wagering rules. So for now, this is a long shot, but a very Vegas one.

Boomer’s Sportsbook Takes Over Downtown

Boomer’s Sportsbook is taking over the books at Binion’s and Four Queens.

That is a big move for an independent operator in a market dominated by national sportsbook brands. Boomer’s has been expanding fast, and now it is planting flags in the heart of downtown.

For bettors, this is worth watching. Downtown gambling is getting more competitive, and Boomer’s is becoming one of the more interesting local sportsbook stories in Nevada.

More Vegas News This Week

Golden Nugget opened a newly relocated poker room, making it the only active poker room in downtown Las Vegas.

Luxor is testing color changes for its famous Sky Beam for the first time in 33 years, with red expected to debut the new system.

Nevada regulators also cleared another key step in Tilman Fertitta’s Caesars takeover.
