DESERT DEGENS WEEKLY BRIEF • JULY 1, 2026

This Week in Vegas: Big Wins, Thin Margins & NBA Dreams

Vegas had a week full of massive numbers. A $10.3 million Megabucks jackpot hit at Westgate, new gaming data showed downtown casinos out-earned the entire Strip in net income, and Golden Knights owner Bill Foley officially launched an NBA expansion bid for Las Vegas.

The big theme this week: the dream is still alive for players, but the business behind Vegas is getting more complicated.

TL;DR (60-Second Version)

  • Megabucks hit big — an Atlanta visitor won a $10.3 million Megabucks jackpot at Westgate on June 17.

  • The Strip’s profit collapsed — Strip revenue stayed strong, but net income fell 81.2% in fiscal 2025.

  • Downtown out-earned the Strip — downtown casinos posted $159.2M in net income, slightly more than the Strip’s $154.2M.

  • NBA-to-Vegas gets serious — Golden Knights owner Bill Foley launched a bid for a Las Vegas NBA team.

  • More Vegas notes — Gold Spike sold, South Point is hosting huge bingo events, airport parking fees are rising, and Vegas was named the No. 1 conference city.

A $10.3 Million Megabucks Jackpot Hits at Westgate

An Atlanta visitor hit a $10.3 million Megabucks jackpot at Westgate on June 17.

Megabucks is the statewide progressive that resets to $10 million after it hits, so this was the start of the range.

It is one of the biggest Las Vegas jackpots so far this year — and a classic “the dream is alive” story. Someone walked in a tourist and walked out a multimillionaire.

Strip Profits Collapsed — But Revenue Did Not

The shocking Strip number this week was not gaming revenue. It was net income.

Strip total revenue was still massive at $21.1 billion in fiscal 2025, the second-highest figure ever. But Strip net income fell to $154.2 million, an 81.2% drop from the year before.

The jaw-dropper: downtown casinos posted $159.2 million in net income, more than every big Strip resort combined.

The takeaway: this is not a demand problem. It is a margin problem. The Strip still brings in huge revenue, but debt, rent, and labor costs are eating the profits.

Bill Foley Makes His NBA-to-Vegas Push

Golden Knights owner Bill Foley is officially pursuing an NBA expansion franchise for Las Vegas.

He hired Morgan Stanley as his financial adviser and wants the team to play at T-Mobile Arena, with roughly $300 million in upgrades to bring the building up to NBA standards.

The target is 2028, which is also when the A’s are expected to arrive. If both happen, Vegas could become a five-major-league city.

This is the most credible version of the NBA-to-Vegas story so far because Foley has already done this once with the Golden Knights.

More Vegas News This Week

Gold Spike sold for $11.38 million, less than half of what Tony Hsieh paid for it in 2013 — a bittersweet downtown story tied to the old Downtown Project era.

South Point is hosting the richest bingo events in Nevada history, with two $1 million summer bingo events already sold out.

Harry Reid Airport is raising parking fees starting July 1, which fits the ongoing “Vegas keeps getting more expensive” conversation.

And Las Vegas was named the No. 1 conference city in America, a reminder that the convention engine is still one of the strongest parts of the city’s business.
